93pts James Suckling for 2023 vintage. Almost 50 years ago, Cakebread released its' very first wine: a 1973 Napa Valley Chardonnay, and have been fine-tuning it ever since. Grapes for this wine come from the world-famous Carneros appellation in southern Napa Valley. This region sits just north of San Pablo Bay, whose influence provides the cool, windswept conditions that produce Chardonnay with ideal balance between fruit characters and acidity. Soils here are predominantly Haire Loam, a light clay that helps grapevines naturally regulate vigor for fruit of intense concentration.

The wine presents a strong bouquet of lemon, hazelnut, gardenia blossom, walnut, seared lemon, yogurt, white flowers, oak, and smoke. Notes of brioche, buttered citrus, almond paste, honeysuckle, yellow apple, Asian pear, chalk dust, and crushed stones may also be detected.

Juicy and plump, this is a fresher take on Rhone Syrah while still displaying the classic hallmarks of the grape. From the Winemaker: Our Post Flirtation wines have been described as “intergenerational crowd pleasers” and Post Flirtation Rosé celebrates the culmination of intergenerational efforts behind the scenes, too. The vineyard source of younger-vine Nero d’Avola for this non vintage blend is both dry farmed (non-irrigated) and employs head trained (goblet) vines. These agricultural practices are certainly not the short-cut to growing grapes commercially today (especially for rosé wines!), but the efforts produce distinctive wines full of concentration, particularly at lower alcohol, and allows the vineyard to develop slowly in order to preserve a longer lifespan. While we adore old, dry farmed vines—and will fight to keep them in the ground—it is equally important to us to seek out and support newer head trained, dry farmed plantings.
