We had such a wonderful dinner at Sushi Masato. It is a small, intimate, beautifully modern restaurant, and everything felt spotless and carefully considered. Because it is family-owned, the experience also had a warmth and personal touch that made the evening feel especially welcoming. We loved meeting the owners and hearing that they are opening a cake shop next door soon. The $78 tasting menu was thoughtful, generous, and very well curated. We started with the yellowtail kale salad, followed by beautifully presented tuna and salmon sashimi. The nigiri was extremely impressive and easily one of the highlights of the meal. Every piece tasted exceptionally fresh and was prepared with real precision. Even the wasabi was a surprising standout because it was so fresh and complemented the fish perfectly. The chawanmushi was delicate and full of complex umami. The hot gyudon was especially memorable for me because it reminded me of the dishes my Japanese grandma would make when I was a kid. It was cozy and deeply comforting while still feeling refined and elevated. The grilled eel bowl was equally satisfying and beautifully presented. We finished with a mango and passion fruit mille-crêpe cake that was light, bright, and beautifully layered. After trying it, we are especially excited about the owners’ upcoming cake shop next door. The quality and precision of the sushi reminded us of meals we have enjoyed at Sushi Nakazawa in DC. The tasting menu was also genuinely generous, and we were completely full by the end. The entire meal felt thoughtful and personal, from the progression of the courses to the presentation and hospitality. Sushi Masato is a special restaurant, and we cannot wait to return.
