gruber gv white
Gruber Roschitz is three siblings: Ewald in the cellar, Christian in the vineyard and Maria managing the daily aspects of the winery. They farm their large family estate (120hectares!) organically in the Weinviertal, (just south of the border with Croatia) a region of Austria not typically known for making attention garnering wines. However, around the town of Roschitz there are some spectacular sites, and they farm many of them. In a sea of agriculture, they work over 100 plots, where their vines dig down through the loess into small granitic hillsides. This results in pure spicy GV with great minerality. Minimal intervention during winemaking means less Sulphur use. Wines are raised in steel tank, meaning they show their primary fruit, lime blossom, peach pits, and a touch of trapped C02 which does not make it bubbly but tingly on the tongue on the first glass. The label is drawn by Ewald and is his whimsical interpretation of their winery’s native yeast. Vegan.$26.00
idlewild white
Mostly Arneis, with a small amount Moscato Gialla & Erbaluce Founded by Sam Bilbro, Idlewild is one of California’s most thoughtful interpreters of Italian grape varieties. “The Bee” Flora & Fauna Blanco 2023 is a Piedmont-inspired field blend built around Arneis. Fruit is sourced from organically farmed vineyards of Fox Hill and Lost Hills Ranch. True to Idlewild’s minimalist approach, the wine is made with a focus on preserving freshness, fragrance, and natural balance rather than imposing a heavy cellar signature. 2023 was a cool vintage so it is both textured and hightoned, balancing the floral character of Moscato with the structure and lemon stone of Arneis and the roundness of its Piedmontese companion, Erbaluce. Vibrant yet delicate, with notes of lemon peel, pear, orange blossom, wet stone, and a subtle savory edge and notes of white gumdrop. For us, a richer style white.$28.00
remoortere sav blanc
Antoine Van Remoortere returned to his family's Loire estate to farm four hectares on Menetou-Salon's Kimmeridgian clay-limestone slopes under organic principles. Spontaneously fermented and raised in steel, this Sauvignon Blanc is transparent and taut — bright citrus peel, wet stone, a thread of lemon zest pulling through to a clean, mineral finish. Precise and honest in the way only careful farming, pure terroir, and native yeasts can deliver.$42.00
bedrock old vine zin
Zinfandel, Carignane, Mourvedre, Alicante Bouchet… This ‘kitchen sink’ blend comes from one of the oldest vineyards still producing in CA. It was planted in the 1890s on the sandy soils of Contra Costa county, in Oakley. Own rooted, gnarled, small berried, small production. There are just a handful of these vyds left. Now in the hands of Morgan Twain Peterson and the team at Bedrock Vyds, they are organically and dry farmed. It drinks in a very old school style, think 1970 CA leather, spice dried cherry, blackberry, blood orange, violet, cracked pepper, and dried herbs. 2023 was also a cool vintage so more fruit tannin.$34.00
etna rosso ciclope red
A vibrant, garnet red Etna Rosso made from 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio grown in volcanic sand at high elevation near the crater of an extinct volcano and lava stone scars. A fresh take on a traditional red made by the revered Salvo Foti who is credited with the rebirth of Etna's ancient wine growing region and his natural, ecologically minded winemaking. The name is a nod to the Cyclopes of myth who toiled in the belly of the volcano. Lithe bright fruit, citrus, tamarind, followed by complex aromas and notes of tobacco, earth, juniper and mint. A slight spiciness of black pepper and nutmeg, carob and clove with a long silky finish.$48.00
