Yessica and Diego Parra are siblings, and the fourth generation in their family to grow coffee. Their grandparents were among the first local buyers for Colombia's National Federation of Coffee Growers, and Yessica and Diego now run their own farm, El Mirador, in Pitalito, Huila, at 1,750 meters. Their brand is Diwan Coffee, and this Geisha is the second coffee they've sent us this year, after their washed Papayo. For it, they got really specific, starting with the ripest cherries, fermenting them whole in open tanks for 60 hours, then drying them slowly for about twenty days with the temperature held steady the whole way. Light roasted, the cup leads with currant and rhubarb tart, with violet running underneath. Juicy and vibrant.

Anzá sits high in western Antioquia, where cooler temperatures and steep terrain push coffee to develop slowly and pack in more sweetness. Arnulfo Caro and his wife Martha Cartagena farm Chiroso at 2,100 meters on Finca Hoyo Rico, and the altitude shows in the cup. The body is silky and clean, with a tropical finish that sticks around longer than you'd expect from a washed coffee. This one rewards attention.

Sprang! is a floral Ethiopian washed blended with a berry-sweet Rwandan anaerobic natural, roasted light-medium for spring. The Ethiopian side opens things up: bright, clean, flowers-on-the-table kind of pretty. The Rwandan side brings the berry sweetness and a smooth, round body. Together, it drinks like that first warm Saturday when you realize you've been sitting on the porch for two hours and you're already on your second cup. Fresh flowers, porch wine, blue skies. A few years ago, Oscar Medina decided he was going to rebuild the family farm from the ground up. He joined Proagromil, a small cooperative of about 90 producers in Monserrate that had been quietly turning out some of the best washed coffees in Huila for years, and got to work. A dedicated drying station. A proper processing area. A composting system so the pulp and mucilage don't go to waste. Oscar runs Finca Los Altares with his mother Omaira Quintero on 2.5 hectares of land near a river sitting at 1,696 meters. This lot took first place in the annual Lo Mejor de Monserrate competition. Bear claw pastry up front, caramel through the middle, a clean apricot note that lifts it. Silky body, tame acidity. The kind of cup you'll want to take your time with.

Kuta Mill sits on Kuta Ridge in the Waghi Valley of Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands, where smallholder farmers from the Ulga and Kolga tribes, once traditional rivals, now deliver cherry to the same mill and get paid bonuses for keeping it consistent. The cherry is washed in a three-stage process, sun-dried on raised beds, and the finished lot is hand-sorted to separate out the peaberries: a single round seed instead of the usual pair, which tends to come through denser and sweeter in the cup. Ours pours like cooling crème brûlée, with caramelized sugar up top, a malty middle, and a quiet dandelion root finish. Heavy, creamy body with mild acidity that mostly stays out of the way.

Nyamasheke sits on the western edge of Rwanda above Lake Kivu, where the lake’s steady humidity moderates the highland temperature and volcanic soil builds mineral density into the coffee. Mukantwaza Laetitia and Rutaganda Gaston built Rwamatamu Farm across 20 hectares of this terrain. They bring over a decade of experience to the operation, which is driven by a workforce that is 80% women. This Indabayo lot is a washed Red Bourbon, carefully dried on raised beds for up to 20 days. It’s a genuinely sweet coffee. You’ll notice raspberry sorbet and white chocolate right away, with a finish that reminds us of shortcake. The Pacas family has farmed this land since 1927, and this lot features Bernardina, a variety discovered on their estate that traces its genetics back to Ethiopian Agaro and Geisha. Natural processing draws out flavors of Tempranillo grape, Luxardo cherry, and cocoa powder. The body is smooth and creamy with soft acidity that lets the fruit and chocolate sit together without competing. This is a wine-like cup with real depth behind it.
