“Sushi's” real name is Makizushi, or “Maki.” Maki refers to “rolled” sushi rice. The rice is rolled in a sheet of dry seaweed, called “nori.”

A hosomaki roll is simple -- about 1 inch around, with nori (seaweed wrapping) outside, and sushi rice and a single ingredient inside such as salmon, Japanese cucumber, etc.
