      One of the greatest characteristics Russ finds in Evesham Wood's proprietary yeast that he "isolated" from a bottle of 1986 Jayer Echezeaux is the velvety texture it imparts on the wines. While we use that yeast in every Pinot Noir we make, the texture it imparts is particularly notable in this wine. The 6 barrels selected from Le Puits Sec display a beautiful balance of elegance while also concentration and power. Bright berries, plum and sage with hints of toasty oak with great length on the finish.

Sam’s expression of the varietal is dark, full-bodied, rich, concentrated and flirtatious, aged for 15 months in 60% new French oak, but displays very little oak influence.       The first thing that captures your eye is a rich, dark purple hue that’s on the edge of inky. Aromas of mulberry, blackberry, and mocha entrance you further. A solid mouthfeel, the fruit reaffirms itself with blackberry, boysenberry, and raspberry preserves. Spicy notes of clove, dried sage, black pepper, and fennel appear along with Black Forest cake and that “vin sauvage” they prize. Well-structured with a solid mouthfeel, refreshing acidity, and velvety finish of fine tannins. Uncommonly layered, complex, and remarkably humble, this Dry Creek Zinfandel is a perfect complement to roasted sweet potatoes with fresh rosemary and sage sprinkled on top, beef stew (a crock pot would make this super easy), hearty grain salad with hazelnuts and cherries, or a selection of cheeses including Blue, Feta, or Stilton.       The red 2017 Reserva, which is sold as Crianza in Spain, is their most popular wine, representing half of the total production of the firm. As is the norm here, it fermented in oak vats and matured in barrels, in this case for 24 months, crafted by their own coopers. The wine is fined with egg whites and kept in bottle for a further 12 months before it's released. I had the wine in the glass for a very long time, and it didn't stop improving; it started a little lactic and creamy, and then it got more and more serious. This is the only red they produced this vintage, so all the best grapes that normally go to other wines were used here; those selected grapes helped to keep the volume of this cuvée, and at the same time, it seems to have boosted the quality of this wine, which feels every bit as good as the 2016. It has a serious palate with fine, chalky tannins and very good balance.

The 2016 finishes with outstanding length and depth yet is also remarkably fresh, leaving hints of hard red candy and the slightest touch of bitter cocoa.
